All you need to know

  • Original Medicare

Implemented in 1965, Medicare is the federally run insurance program for people 65 and older to have access to health insurance. Over the years, several changes have been made to expand coverage and give people different options in their coverage. While Medicare today has 4 parts (A,B,C and D), we need to start with Parts A and B to understand how the rest of Medicare works and all our different options when it comes to other plans.

  • Medicare Advantage

A Medicare Advantage Plan, or Medicare Part C, is health insurance offered by private companies approved by Medicare. It allows beneficiaries to receive Medicare benefits through an alternative route, combining Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) into one plan. These plans often include extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare, like vision, dental, and hearing services, and many also offer prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D).

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement Insurance, often referred to as Medigap, is designed to help individuals cover out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not fully pay. These additional expenses can include premiums, copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Medigap plans are offered by private insurance companies and are standardized, meaning that each plan letter (A through N) provides the same basic benefits regardless of the insurer.

Choosing the right Medicare Supplement plan can contribute significantly to healthcare cost management, offering peace of mind and financial security for medical expenses. Click below for more information on these plans.

  • Medicare Part D Prescription Drugs

These plans may cover a wide range of medications, but the specific drugs included, known as the formulary, can vary by plan.
